“The cool thing about Granulator is that it will reward you for getting really nerdy with it and really diving in, and at the same time you can just throw something in there and play it. You don’t need to know what every single function does for it to actually be useful. Think of it as a way of turning something (a sound) into a pad really quickly.” - Ryan Origin

Listen to Ryan manipulate a vocal sample to create an other worldly and atmospheric texture using Granulator. He explains how Ableton freezes tracks, yet they are still editable unlike most other DAWs.
After an example or two about freezing he moves on to using a cool Bob James sample as a source file. In this example he explains how to set grain size to audition the portion of the sample you want to use and then shrink it down so you can start getting creative with it. Then Ryan explains the Spray setting in Granulator, which through a bit of sample start randomization keeps your repeating grains from sounding too monotonous. The Spike setting allows you to create a rhythmic volume change. Don’t forget that Granulator also has a full page of the more typical synthesis controls you would expect, such as filter frequency and Q, amp and filter envelopes, FM and more. Things get pretty spooky sounding, really quickly!
